Coffee. It’s one of the first things we grab on our way to work. Coffee is the perfect solution that helps employees power through their work day — it’s no surprise that a delicious cup of joe is one of the most consumed drinks in the world. Coffee has been linked to productivity and is a popular drink throughout many businesses and organizations.

Coffee has amazing benefits, however, the unfortunate other side is that employees, customers, guests, or clients will eventually spill coffee on your business’ carpet. Coffee stains can be embarrassing and make your commercial building’s carpet look filthy and gross, so speed is essential when cleaning up spilled coffee before it becomes a permanent stain.

So what is the proper way to clean up spilled coffee so it won’t stain your business’ carpet? Attempting to clean a coffee spill incorrectly can increase the risk of the affected area staining. Check out the following tips to effectively remove the stain and avoid having a disgusting carpet in your office or business:

Blot…don’t rub!

One of the first actions that should be taken when coffee is spilled is to blot the affected area with a clean cloth or paper towels. It is crucial not to rub the area, as this will increase the risk of a stain in your carpeting. The best strategy is to start from the outside of the stain and work your way in so the chances of the spilled area expanding are decreased. If the affected area is no longer damp and dry, the best approach is blot with a damp paper towel or cloth.

Wash the area

The next step is to clean the area by giving it a simple wash. There are many different ways to wash the coffee-stained area, but the most common home remedy is mixing one teaspoon of liquid dish soap, one teaspoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water. Apply the mixture to the carpeting with a clean washcloth. Once applied, blot the area with a dry towel or cloth, and continue to do so between applications until the stain is removed.

If the stain does not seem to be disappearing it’s time to use the method that our grandmothers were experts in; create a paste using water and baking soda. You’ll want the consistency to be similar to toothpaste. Cover the stain with the paste and let it dry. Once the paste is dry vacuum the area thoroughly and the stain should be gone!
